Building Vocabulary

Your child will enjoy expanding their vocabulary through exploration of compound words, vivid imagery, and hyperbole. Have them keep a list of compound words that they find throughout their independent reading. Hyperbole is especially fun to discover; who doesn't like to exaggerate a little? Encourage your child to come up with their own hyperboles to use in their writing.

Referring to Text Features for Understanding

Referring to Text Features for Understanding

Quality nonfiction text should not only contain accurate information, it should also be visually appealing and accessible to the reader. Nonfiction text features—like charts, graphs, illustrations, and captions—can be essential in helping us further understand a topic. Show your child the value of nonfiction text features with kid-friendly nonfiction texts, such as social studies and science articles from magazines. Ask your child to imagine these examples without text features. Are they still as informative and engaging?
