Transition words help the reader progress from one thought to the next seamlessly. They provide logical structure and organization in an essay and are essential in reading comprehension, thus, using the right transition is key to good writing. They not only connect ideas, but they also introduce a shift in thought or topic and provide contrast, emphasis or a conclusion, among many things. Encourage your students to use as many transitions as possible!

Transition words can be categorized in the following ways:
