Rectangular Prisms Resources

Rectangular prisms are solid, three-dimensional objects. Each of their six faces are all rectangles. Further, rectangular prisms posses the same cross-section along any given length. To help your students understand more clearly what a rectangular prism is, and how to use them, let them play with examples from Education.com below. These games include sorting virtual shapes, a shape matching game, and more.

Learn More About Rectangular Prisms

Pointing out to students that rectangular prisms are to rectangles as spheres are to circles, or cubes to squares, is a good start.

A rectangle is a two-dimensional object, which can be measured in terms of length and width. A rectangular prism contains a third dimension, height.

Once students understand this fundamental difference, there are simple calculations they can use to calculate the properties of a rectangular prism. Rectangular prism properties:
  • Surface area: (2 × w × l) + (2 × l × h) + (2 × h × w)
  • Volume: l × w × h
In addition, these fun facts about rectangular prisms may be useful to students trying to understand how to draw or otherwise use rectangular prisms:
  • Number of edges: 12
  • Number of faces: 6
  • Number of vertices: 8
One special case of rectangular prisms is the right rectangular prism. These objects all possess right angles between the base and sides.

There are other types of right prisms, too, but a right rectangular is a three-dimensional object based on the two-dimensional rectangle, as opposed to squares. A right cuboid is the three-dimensional cousin to a square.

While rectangular prisms are similar to cuboids, this shape with six quadrilateral faces is based on a rectangle, not a square.
