## Measuring Length Resources

An all-time favorite in measuring the length of an object is a single piece of wood re-used over the years to track a child’s growth. For more ideas about how to practise measuring length, check out the activities below. While out measuring objects, your child will have the perfect opportunity to practise their addition skills as well, including working with fractions.

A student’s first introduction to geometrical concepts might be the concept of measuring length. Length is the distance, in a single plane, from one point to another in a standard unit of measure. When students first begin to work with length, they will likely not use any specific unit of measure, instead becoming comfortable with the concept by comparing length of different objects from a single point. They can begin estimating at this point. Without measuring, which of two objects would be longer.

Length is not always a straight line, either. When students measure the perimeter of irregular objects, they can use string to line the edge of the object, then measure the string for an accurate measurement. This can be enlightening to students as they realise that the shortest distance between two points is a straight line and just how much shorter that straight line can be.

When students begin to measure, they can start to perform calculations on the measurements they get. What is the difference in length between two objects? How much would the length of one object have to decrease to fit into a container.

At this point students can be introduced to length as an attribute of Two-dimensional shapes. Determining the length of different shapes will begin to lay the foundation for finding the area of these shapes in the future.

Working with students on the geometrical attribute of length using the resources provided above by Education.com may help students build a strong foundation on which they can approach geometry in the future.
