Students will use a classroom word wall to write and spell grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words.

The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.
EL adjustments
(5 minutes)
  • Gather students together for the start of the lesson.
  • Explain that you want to write a story. Narrate your process as you land on a subject, such as a famous spy, and suggest an opening sentence with a word from your word wall in it. Model struggling to spell the word as a lead-in to the introduction of a word wall.
  • Show the word wall and review or explain to students that a Word wallIs a spelling tool that can help them find and spell difficult or irregularly spelled words.
  • Explain that to find the correct word on the word wall, students will need to start by figuring out the first letter of the word they are looking for.
(5 minutes)
  • Model how to find a specific word on the word wall by identifying the first letter of the word and looking underneath the letter for the word.
  • Explain that there is often more than one word under each letter, so students will have to practise reading the other letters in the word to figure out if it is the word they are looking for.
  • Demonstrate how you can walk over to the word wall and record the spelling of the word from your story on a sticky note, and then take it back to your seat.
(10 minutes)
  • Go over the word cards you created for this lesson (start with 4 to 6 word cards) and practise reading each word with the class.
  • Place each word card under the correct letter of the alphabet on your classroom word wall. Ask students to call out the correct letter of the alphabet each word belongs under on the word wall.
  • Pass out index cards with that contain the words already posted on the word wall to each student and assign them a partner.
  • Have each student pair read the words together and identify the matching word on the word wall.
  • Ask students to trade index cards with another pair if time permits.
(15 minutes)
  • Pass out the word wall worksheets and have each student complete them independently.
  • Provide students with assistance as needed.
  • Support:Encourage students who need additional support to draw images that correspond to each individual letter sound on an alphabet chart to encourage letter-sound practise.
  • Enrichment:Provide advanced students with additional word wall challenges, such as using word wall words in an original story or poem.
(5 minutes)
  • Each student should choose one word from the word wall and write it on an index card.
  • Ask students to write a sentence using their word on the back of their index card. This index card can be used as an exit ticket for the lesson.
(5 minutes)
  • While students are working independently, put 2 to 3 additional sight words on the word wall.
  • Ask students to help you find the new words on the word wall. Make sure that students understand the importance of knowing the first letter sound and confirming the ending sound in order to find the word.
  • Review how to use the word wall as needed.
