The Shape of Me and Other Stuff
Students will be able to correctly identify and draw shapes.
- Tell students that today they're going to learn about shapes.
- Ask the students what shapes they know. You can even have students go up to the board one by one and draw the shapes.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(20 minutes)
- Read The Shape of Me and Other StuffBy Dr. Seuss. Point out the different shapes in the book as you read.
- Tell the children that there are many different shapes all around us all the time. Ask them to name some of the shapes found on the human body. Example: circle = eyes and nostrils.
Guided practise(25 minutes)
- Using the Shape Chart worksheet, go on a shape hunt in the classroom.
- Have students volunteer some shapes and where they found them in the classroom.
- Compare findings between the students with a class discussion.
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Ask students to work on the Shape Challenge: Find the Different Shapes! worksheet in small groups or pairs.
- Ask them to identify the different shapes they find on the worksheet.
- Enrichment:Have advanced students work on the Shape Challenge: Find the Different Shapes! by themselves.
- Support:For students who need support, help them as they work on the Shape Challenge: Find the Different Shapes! worksheet.
- Draw shapes on the board and have students identify them.
- Alternatively, say the names of the shapes and have the students draw the shapes on the board.
Review and closing(10 minutes)
- Ask students to think of the different shapes that make up different objects. Example: A house is made up of triangles, squares, and rectangles.
- Have students volunteer to share their ideas.
