The New England Colonies: Economy
Students will be able to identify and describe the activities that led to economic success in the New England colonies.
- Ask your students to name the New England colonies.
- Have students brainstorm some factors that might have contributed to the economic success in the New England colonies.
- Record your students' responses on the board or on chart paper.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(20 minutes)
- Go over the New England Colonies: Economy slideshow presentation with your students.
Guided practise(30 minutes)
- Divide your students into four groups.
- Assign each group an industry out of fishing, whaling, trading, and shipbuilding.
- Give each group two boards of Styrofoam.
- Tell each group to create three to five 3D pieces using Styrofoam to represent their industry. Tell them to colour the pieces as well.
- An example could be an ocean, a fishing rod, and fishes for the group that selects fishing.
Independent working time(20 minutes)
- Ask each student to write a dialogue that could occur between people, animals, or objects involved in the industries.
- A few examples could be a dialogue between the whale and the man killing it, a slave and a colonist, or two people who are building ships.
- Enrichment:Ask your students to research the steps that it took to extract oil and create lights out of whales for the colonists. Demonstrate each step using words and pictures.
- Support:Ask your students to divide their paper into fourths. Have them draw and write words about each industry that thrived in the New England colonies.
- Ask your students to describe the four industries that led to economic success in the New England colonies.
Review and closing(15 minutes)
- Ask your students to read their dialogue out loud.
