The Letter M: Uppercase and Lowercase
Students will be able to recognise upper and lowercase M.
- Tell your students that you are thinking of a mystery letter.
- Invite them to guess the letter with the following prompts: The opposite of happy (mad), something to clean the floor (mop), something shining in the sky at night (moon), something to catch a baseball with (mitt), something you may need if you are lost (map),And Something that makes your shoes messy (mud).
- Ask the students to name the letter that all the words begin with.
- Play the M Song.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Display How to Make an M. Read the poem while tracking the words with a pointer.
- Invite your students to describe where on the dotted lines the letter M is.
- Instruct your students to say the rhyme with you as they “air write” the uppercase letter M.
- Continue in the same way with the lower case M rhyme.
- Ask your students to describe how the lower case letter is different from the uppercase letter.
- Make sure they notice the lowercase letter begins under the dotted line.
- Have your students say the rhyme with you as they “air write” the lowercase letter M.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Instruct your students to get yellow and orange crayons and sit in a circle.
- Hand out the M Maze worksheet. Read the directions with your students.
- Model how to colour the first few squares with the yellow crayon.
- After the yellow path is complete, instruct your students to go back and circle all of the uppercase letters on the path with the orange crayon.
- Have your students hold their papers up to share and compare with their friends.
Independent working time(20 minutes)
- Hand out the colour Cut Glue activity.
- Invite your students to look at the pages and guess what they will be doing.
- Tell your students that they will be decorating the dotted shapes on the sheet and cutting them out.
- Have them assemble the shapes into beautiful upper and lowercase M posters.
- Instruct your students to collect the supplies they need to begin working.
- Enrichment:Have your students cut out pictures that begin with the target letter from a magazine to create a collage.
- Support:Offer verbal and visual clues to support students who need additional help.
- During the lesson, look for students who are participating, following directions, and keeping up with their peers.
- Offer encouragement and support with visual and verbal clues. Visual support could be a complete example of the maze and the rhyme.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Invite your students to hold their posters up to share and compare with their friends.
- Encourage your students to notice how everyone made their posters a little differently, yet they are all about the letter M.
- Ask your students to recite the rhyme one more time as they "air write" the letters.
