Students will demonstrate understanding of syllables as units of sound that can be counted.
- Gather students in a circle.
- Introduce the Syllable Game, where students learn to clap out the syllables in their names.
- Announce each student’s name with a clap and count for each syllable. For example: Jo (clap) seph (clap), two syllables.Explain that each clap counts out a sound that is called a Syllable.
- Model the game with your own name and clap for each syllable. Ask students to echo the number of syllables.
- Have each student announce their own name with claps.
- The choral response of the group after each name announcement should be to say the number of syllables.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Ask students to think about what kind of creatures would swim in the sea. Have them share with the group what those animals are named.
- Create a list on chart paper of responses that fit the sea creature category. If not volunteered by the students, add "jellyfish" to the list.
- Say that you need help announcing these creatures’ names. Have your class play the Syllable Game with the names of the creatures.
- As you announce each sea creature, put a sticky dot for each syllable beside each word on the chart paper list.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Announce that now the class will draw jellyfish with their names inside and use sticky dots to count the syllables.
- Model tracing your hand, with the thumb tucked in, to create a 4-tentacled jellyfish on the paper plate.
- Print your name inside the hand outline.
- Clap out the syllables in your name and put a sticky dot on the plate for each syllable.
- Colour a blue “sea” around the jellyfish. Hang up for display.
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Pass out paper plates and direct children to make their own jellyfish. Encourage early finishers to add other creatures and details to the picture.
- Introduce and read the directions for the Draw the Syllables 2 worksheet.
- Remind students that they can play the Syllable Game to figure out how many dots to draw.
- Rotate around the room, monitoring for understanding.
- Enrichment:Challenge students to create more syllable sea creatures.
- Support:Assign peer mentors to aid with hand outline activity and worksheet.
- Display the paper plate projects and have students play the Syllable Game to check if the dots match the number of claps.
- Collect worksheets and check for correctness.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Ask students if they feel they understand the lesson and to share what is still hard for them to understand.
- Encourage students to ask questions to resolve any issues they still face.
