# St. Patrick's Day Subtraction Pictures

Today is your lucky day! In this fun and engaging St. Patrick's Day lesson plan, students will solve subtraction facts up to 10 and draw St. Patrick's Day themed pictures to match each maths fact.

Students will be able to solve subtraction facts up to 10 and create a visual representation to match each fact.

(5 minutes)
• Tell students that this month is very special because it is when people across the world celebrate St. Patrick's Day.
• Ask students to raise their hands and share what they know about St. Patrick's Day.
• Explain to students that during St. Patrick's Day we celebrate the people, art, religion, food, and culture of Ireland.
• Tell students that today we will combine our celebration of St. Patrick's Day with a maths lesson on subtraction maths facts.
(10 minutes)
• Project the practise One-Digit Subtraction 1 worksheet onto the board.
• Tell students that this worksheet contains subtraction maths facts and their job is to find the difference for each maths fact (disregard the sentences beneath each maths equation and only focus on solving the maths equation).
• Remind students that the DifferenceIs the result of subtracting one number from another number.
• Call on a student to solve the first maths fact (10 – 6 = ____) and share their strategy for finding the difference. Strategies might include memorization of maths facts, drawing a picture, or using maths manipulatives.
• Continue solving the subtraction maths facts in the first two rows by calling on student volunteers to find the differences and share their strategies.
(10 minutes)
• Provide students with time to complete the practise One-Digit Subtraction 1 worksheet independently.
• Circulate around the room providing extra support, scratch paper, or manipulatives if necessary.
• Come together as a group to share differences and address any questions or challenges.
• Tell students that they have completed the first step in today's lesson by finding the difference to all of the subtraction maths facts.
• Explain to students that the second step is to create their own subtraction worksheet with St. Patrick's Day themed pictures.
• Project the St. Paddy's Day Subtraction worksheet onto the board.
• Tell students that this is an example of a St. Patrick's Day themed subtraction worksheet with pictures that you cross off to match each maths fact.
• Brainstorm a list of St. Patrick's Day themed items that students can incorporate into their pictures, and write and draw these ideas on chart paper labeled St. Patrick's Day Pictures(e.g. leprechauns, four-leaf clovers, rainbows, pots of gold, horseshoes, gold coins, and green hats).
• Using a piece of blank white paper, markers, and the practise One-Digit Subtraction 1 worksheet, model for students how to label your paper with number one, write the first subtraction maths fact, and draw a St. Patrick's Day themed picture in which you cross off the number of items to be subtracted from the total number of items. Model this process using at least two subtraction maths facts.
(20 minutes)
• Distribute blank white paper to each student.
• Tell students to use their pencils, markers, and the answers from the practise One-Digit Subtraction 1 worksheet to create their own subtraction worksheet with St. Patrick's Day themed pictures just as they saw in the St. Paddy's Day Subtraction worksheet.

Support:

• Provide students with manipulatives (e.g. unifix cubes or counters) to assist them with the subtraction maths facts during the Guided practise/Modeling section.
• Give students the option to complete the St. Paddy's Day Subtraction worksheet instead of creating their own (be sure to prepare extra copies in advance).

Enrichment:

• Challenge students to create their own St. Patrick's Day worksheet with pictures by using the information from word problems (see the St. Patrick's Day Word Problems worksheet).
(10 minutes)
• Distribute whiteboards to each student.
• Write a subtraction maths fact on the board and tell your students to draw a picture that matches the equation.
• Tell students to hold up their whiteboards after drawing their pictures so that you can check their work.
• Draw a picture on the board with items crossed off and ask students to write an equation that matches.
• Tell students to hold up their whiteboards after writing their equations so that you can check their work.
• Continue with at least two subtraction maths facts and two pictures.
(5 minutes)
• Ask students to think about what happens to a group of numbers when some are taken away. Does the number get smaller or bigger?
• Tell students to brainstorm different times when they would use subtraction in real life (e.g. dividing toys among friends or buying something at a grocery store).
• Explain to students that subtraction is a very important maths skill to learn and practise because it will help them as they get older and start learning about new maths concepts, such as division and fractions.
