Simple Addition to 10

This lesson is a great introduction to the concept of simple addition! After listening to a story, students will complete a sensory activity to try adding on their own!

Students will be able to practise simple addition.

The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.

(10 minutes)
Caterpillar Addition
  • Ask students to find various items around the room. For instance, call on a student to find one toy. Then, call on another student to find two chairs.
  • After you have about 10 items, ask students how many items they have all together.
  • Inform the students that they just practiced simple addition!

  • Now, give each student a handful of shaving cream. Invite students to practise drawing 1 wheel. Then, have them add another.
  • Ask students how many wheels they have all together.
  • Have students practise making various addition problems independently. They may need guidance through this.
(5 minutes)
  • Now, have students complete the Caterpillar Addition worksheet independently.
  • Walk around the classroom to make sure all students are on task.

Support:

  • Students having difficulty adding in the shaving cream activity should be paired with another student.

Enrichment:

  • Ask students in need of enrichment to work with struggling students during the shaving cream activity.
  • Assessment should be based on the outcome of the worksheet.

  • Call students up one at a time to the board.
  • Invite them to draw a wheel like Wally, or another object, and demonstrate a simple addition problem. If they need help, draw the object for them and have them count until they have the answer!
