Students will demonstrate understanding of the parts and organization of a book.
- Start the lesson by asking students about their favorite books. Potential questions include: What's the name, or TitleOf the book? Who is the Author, or person who wrote the book? What does the book look like?
- Show your students any book, and point to the large name on the Front cover, or the outside front part of the book. Explain that this is the title. Point to the author of the book.
- Explain that there is much more information in a book than just the title and the author.
- Show your students the name of the Illustrator, the person who draws pictures for the book.
- Look at the side of the book, or the Spine, to show your students that they can identify the title and author of a book from the side.
- Show them the Back coverOf the book, and let them point out what they see. Generally, the back cover includes information about the book and author.
- Open the book to show the Title page, explaining that this is a page inside the book that says the book title and author.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- On the board or on a large piece of paper, show or draw a large illustration of a book.
- Ask for a volunteer to label the front cover with a sticky note.
- Have your students identify the title, author, and illustrator with sticky notes.
- While students are coming up to label, ask your class some guiding questions. Possible questions include: What is the difference between the author and the illustrator? Where can this information be found?
- Next, ask your students to label the spine of a book.
- Have some students identify the back cover.
- Show them the ISBN number, a special number given to a specific book to help locate the book at the school library, local library, and local book stores.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Ask all of your students to choose books and place them on their desks.
- Give them five minutes to label their books with the new vocabulary they just learned.
- Refer to the board to show them where to label the parts of their books.
- When your students have finished, have two or three students show the rest of the class what they labeled.
Independent working time(10 minutes)
- Give your students the Parts of a Book worksheet, glue sticks, and scissors.
- Explain that they will label the parts of a book using the worksheet.
- Refer to the board for guidance.
- Instruct your students to cut out the pictures on the bottom of the paper, and have them glue them in the appropriate areas.
- Give your students the Parts of a Book Trace worksheet to practise. Rather than identifying the parts by themselves, have them trace the letters on the page.
- To give your students an extra challenge, have them complete the Story Flipbook activity. Ask them to create their own books and label the books as they did in this lesson.
- On the Parts of a Book Assessment sheet, write your students' names in the blank spaces.
- As you walk around the room, write the parts of the book that your students recognise. Take note of what they don't recognise.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Have two books (one per team) with sticky notes or taped blank labels in front of the classroom.
- Have a timer set for five minutes.
- Divide the class into two teams.
- Choose three student representatives per team, and give them sticky notes.
- Instruct the representatives to label the books with the help of the rest of the team.
- The team that finishes before the timer goes off wins!
