Pre-Writing Skills: Tracing Lines

Before they begin writing letters, evaluate your students' fine motor and pre-writing skills! Vertical lines will give students practise for forming letters such as F, L, E, and H.

Students will be able to write vertical lines to form uppercase letters such as F, L, E, and H.

(10 minutes)
London Bridge is Falling DownTracing Lines
  • Call the students together as a group.
  • Ask them if they know the song "London Bridge is Falling Down."
  • Play "London Bridge is Falling Down"For your students.
(10 minutes)
  • Inform the students that they will be drawing Vertical lines.
  • Explain that vertical lines go down like the London Bridge.
  • Draw a few vertical lines on the board.
  • Ask the students to draw vertical lines on the board as well.
(10 minutes)
  • Give the students paper, pencils, crayons, and markers.
  • Ask your students to draw 2 vertical lines with the pencils, crayons, and markers on their papers. Each student should have 6 vertical lines on his paper.
  • Ask the students to turn their papers over and draw vertical lines with the writing tool of their choice.
(10 minutes)
  • Give each student a London Bridge is Falling Down worksheet.
  • Read the instructions to the students.
  • Have them complete the worksheet.
  • Enrichment:Give the students both horizontal and vertical lines to trace in the same lesson.
  • Support:Give the students sheets with tracing lines already printed for vertical lines to complete the guided practise.
(10 minutes)
  • Give each student the Tracing Lines worksheet.
  • Read the instructions to the students.
  • Collect the worksheet when it is completed for grading.
(10 minutes)
  • Call the students together.
  • Have them use their index fingers to draw imaginary vertical lines.
