Patterning practise with the Flag

Students will be able to create a pattern, continue an existing pattern, and explain why we celebrate the Fourth of July.

(5 minutes)
  • Show students the American flag.
  • Ask students why the flag is displayed in the classroom. Have them identify the colors of the flag.
  • Ask students if there is a pattern that they see on the flag.
(10 minutes)
  • Read students the story Fourth of July, Sparkly Sky. Ask comprehension questions throughout the story.
  • Explain to students that we celebrate the Fourth of July because it is when our country gained its independence.
  • Ask students to name traditions that go along with the Fourth of July, such as fire works and picnics.
  • Tell students that today they will be creating their own flag and practising patterning!
(10 minutes)
  • To practise patterning, have students play the game Roly's Pattern Quiz.
  • Then, display the flag in a place where all students can view it.
(15 minutes)
  • Give each student a white piece of paper and 7 red stripes. Have them create a red white pattern using the red strips. They must glue them in the appropriate place.
  • Next, they should glue on the blue rectangle and places stars on it.
  • Enrichment:Have students in need of enrichment complete the colour the American Flag coloring page.
  • Support:To help students better understand the flag patterning, give them a mini flag to place in front of their seat to help create the correct pattern.
  • Assessment should be based on the patterning the students do through the flag craft.
(10 minutes)
  • Ask students to identify what country the flag represents.
  • Have them share the pattern that they see on the flag.
  • Have students use red and white linking cubes to create the pattern on the flag.
