Students will be able to create a pattern, continue an existing pattern, and explain why we celebrate the Fourth of July.
Introduction
(5 minutes)- Show students the American flag.
- Ask students why the flag is displayed in the classroom. Have them identify the colors of the flag.
- Ask students if there is a pattern that they see on the flag.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling
(10 minutes)- Read students the story Fourth of July, Sparkly Sky. Ask comprehension questions throughout the story.
- Explain to students that we celebrate the Fourth of July because it is when our country gained its independence.
- Ask students to name traditions that go along with the Fourth of July, such as fire works and picnics.
- Tell students that today they will be creating their own flag and practising patterning!
Guided practise
(10 minutes)- To practise patterning, have students play the game Roly's Pattern Quiz.
- Then, display the flag in a place where all students can view it.
Independent working time

- Have them share the pattern that they see on the flag.
- Have students use red and white linking cubes to create the pattern on the flag.
