Outstanding Object Pronouns

Which set of standards are you looking for?

Students will be able to use the correct object pronoun to replace the noun in a sentence.

(10 minutes)
  • Ask students, "What is a pronoun?" Encourage students to give examples of pronouns.
  • Tell students that today they will be learning about a specific type of pronoun called an object pronoun.
  • Inform students that you will be reading aloud a book about pronouns to them, and you want them to be listening for information specifically about the object pronouns.
  • Read aloud I and You and Don't Forget Who: What is a Pronoun?By Brian P. Cleary.
  • Stop periodically during the read aloud to make connections between the pronouns in the book and the examples students gave previously in the class discussion.
  • Ask students to come up with their own definition of an object pronoun after reading the book.
  • Collect student answers and combine to create a class definition.
  • Explain to students that an Object pronounIs a word that replaces a noun as the object of the sentence. An object pronoun usually comes after the verb (ie. the dog ate ItOff the floor) or a preposition (ie. the dog rode on the plane with Him).
  • Direct students' attention to the list of object pronouns in the classroom.
(10 minutes)
  • Explain to students that they will be reading sentences with the object underlined today. They will be responsible for choosing the object pronoun that best completes the sentence.
  • Model reading three sentences on sentence strips with the object underlined. Display these on the document camera.
  • Explain to students that you know it needs an object pronoun because it is either after the verb or the preposition in the sentence.
  • Point out the labels you have placed around the room with object pronouns on them.
  • Show students how you tape your sentence to the label because you know that is the correct object pronoun for that sentence.
    • Example: The worker mowed the grass with the powerful lawn mower. → object pronoun: it
(10 minutes)
  • Divide students into groups of 3–4 students.
  • Give each group 3–4 sentences on strips of paper, in which the object is underlined for students to replace with an object pronoun. (Example: You can purchase The bowls on the shelfAt the customer service station.)
  • Give each group one piece of tape for each sentence strip.
  • Instruct students to tape the sentence to the object pronoun labels in the classroom that would best replace the object in the sentence on their sentence strips.
  • Explain to students that they will work as a team to place the sentences on the correct labels.
  • Review each group's work by holding a class discussion.
  • Ask learners to explain how they knew that was the correct object pronoun to use.
(10 minutes)
  • Distribute a copy of the Grammar Basics: Object Pronouns worksheet to each student.
  • Explain to students that they will select an object pronoun that best completes the sentence, just as they did during guided practise.
  • Remind students of expectations during independent work time.
  • Circulate while students complete the worksheet, checking in and asking students to explain their answers.

Support:

  • Give students a smaller amount of pronoun choices for each example so options are narrowed down.
  • Give struggling students an example sentence for each object pronoun to which they can refer.

Enrichment:

  • Challenge your advanced students to write a paragraph without using any pronouns. Then, instruct them to go back into the paragraph and replace the objects with object pronouns. This exercise will take their understanding of object pronouns even deeper.
  • For advanced students, provide them with access to the Noun Pronoun Agreement exercise to practise using different types of pronouns in sentences.
(3 minutes)
  • Collect the completed Grammar Basics: Object Pronouns worksheets.
  • Call on non-volunteers to recall object pronouns and where they can be found in a sentence.
  • Call on non-volunteers to give examples of sentences with object pronouns.
(2 minutes)
  • Distribute an index card or sticky note to each student.
  • Instruct students to complete the following exit ticket task:
    • Write a sentence using an object pronoun. Circle the object pronoun.
