Students will order objects by length.
- Use snap cubes to make three towers of different lengths. If possible, make each tower with a different colour cube.
- Show the towers to the class and ask, “Which tower is the longest?”
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Now ask, “Which tower is the second longest?” and “Which tower is the shortest?” Model how to put the towers in order from shortest to longest.
- Count how many cubes are in each tower and write their lengths on the board.
- Call on a student to come to the front of the class and make a tower that is longer than all the other towers. Count the number of cubes in the tower and write the number on the board.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Now hand out snap cubes to the class and challenge students to create a tower that is shorter than all the other towers.
- Have students count and share how many cubes are in their tower. CompareThe towers that the students made. Ask, "Do they all have the same numbers of cubes? Why or why not?"
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Tell students that they are now going to make three towers out of snap cubes. When they are done, students should switch towers with a partner. Each student should put their partner’s towers in OrderFrom smallest to largest, writing the lengths of each tower on their papers.
- When partners are done with this activity, they should complete the Length worksheet.
- Have students make two towers to order.
- Have students make four or more towers to order.
Assess students’ understanding by observing how they ordered the snap cube towers and by assessing their worksheets.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
Call on students to share the towers that they ordered with the class.
