Order in the Room!

Students will get comfortable ordering numbers while having fun using familiar, everyday objects to "map the room."

  • Students will be able to recognise and demonstrate understanding of ordering numbers from 1-10.
The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.
EL adjustments
(5 minutes)
Number Grid
  • Tell your students that they will be using a classroom map to order numbers from 1-10.
  • Ask students to discuss ways we use ordering numbers in our daily lives. You may bring up how you count the students in the class for attendance or counting the days on the calendar.
(5 minutes)
  • Gather your students into a group area and count aloud as you touch their heads individually.
  • Now do it again, but give each student a number card. Make sure to not simply go in a row, but instead distribute the numbers in order in a random pattern to the students as you count. Have the students count off out loud in order.
(5 minutes)
  • Ask the students to arrange the number cards in order, either on the floor, on a number clothesline, or on the board.
  • If using one set of number cards, collect them now and hide them around the room (this would probably best be done while students are at recess or out of the classroom for another lesson).
(10 minutes)
  • Let the students know that they will be using the classroom map to order numbers from 1-10.
  • Students will take their classroom picture map with them as they search the room for numbers. Some students may choose to look for number 1 and work in order, while others will fill in the numbers as they discover them on their route. Tell the students to write the numbers in the box next to the picture of the classroom objects or areas.


  • Students who struggle with writing numbers may cut and paste the numbers on the grid or use numbers 1–5.


  • Students who display need for a challenge in this activity may write the number words under the number on the map.

  • Have students order number cards, number blocks, or have them complete a dot-to-dot worksheet to check for understanding.
(5 minutes)
  • Have your class count to ten together.
  • Answer any questions your class may have.
  • Have students practise the skill with online games, such as Speed Counting 1-10.
