One Fish, Two Fish
Students will be able to add and subtract single and double digit numbers.
- Tell the class that today, you're going to read One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue FishBy Dr. Seuss.
- Encourage students to read along if they can.
Explicit instruction/Teacher modeling(20 minutes)
- Read the story to the class.
- If possible, have the students take turn reading parts of the story as opposed to the teacher being the reader. This is a good way to practise reading skills.
Guided practise/Interactive modeling(15 minutes)
- Ask the students what kinds of fish they know or have seen.
- Ask them to describe them.
Independent working time(40 minutes)
- Ask the students to draw their own fish based on the ones in the book. The wackier and crazier the fish, the better!
- If the students are able to write sentences about their drawings, let them do so.
- Have them share their fish creations to the class.
- Let the students play Terrific Tens Go FishOnce they're done.
- Enrichment:Students above level can play Terrific Tens Go Fish in small groups.
- Support:Students below level can play Terrific Tens Go Fish with your guidance.
- You can test your students by giving them simple maths problems on the board.
- You can also let them play Fish Bowl Addition.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Talk about One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Ask the students for their opinions on the book.
- Talk about the maths games you've played (Terrific Tens Go Fish and Fish Bowl Addition). Ask the students what they liked or didn't like about the games.
