Which set of standards are you looking for?

Students will recall, count, and match the appropriate number of plastic building pieces to the number name.

(5 minutes)
  • Introduce the lesson by asking about counting. Good discussion questions include: Why is it important to count? What are some things that we count every day in our classroom?
  • Explain to your class that they will match the right amount of objects to the right number. For example, if a student is counting pencils to the number five, he has to make sure that there are also five pencils.
(10 minutes)
  • Give each student a Builder worksheet.
  • Play Counting at the Beach SongFor the class.
  • As the song plays, explain to your students that they will hear about matching the right number to the right number of sea objects.
  • When the song is complete, ask guiding questions. Possible questions include: What was the song about? Why is it necessary to count the kites, crabs, and shells?
  • Ask for examples of why counting is helpful. For example, it can be helpful to know how many people are attending a dinner so there are the correct number of place settings. It can also be good to know how many cupcakes to give to children at a party.
  • Display the Builder worksheet on the board. Show that the worksheet has numerals on the left side and the same number of boxes to the right of the number.
  • Point to the number one and ask your students to say the number aloud. Potential guiding questions include: How many boxes are next to the number one? How many plastic blocks should I put in the box?
  • Continue the activity until you reach number three.
(5 minutes)
  • Pair your students up, and have them take turns identifying and counting the numbers on the Builder worksheet. Start with the number four.
  • Direct your students to count their plastic blocks aloud to their partners, and have them place one block per square. For example, for the number four, one student would say the number aloud and count out four blocks, placing one in each of the squares next to the number four.
  • When all the pairs have completed counting the number six, move on to independent working time.
(10 minutes)
  • Remind your students to point to numbers on the left and to quietly say the numbers to themselves. Have them start with the number seven.
  • Tell your students to take their time counting the correct amount of blocks to the correct number.
  • Ask your students to count out their plastic blocks for each number, and have them place them into each empty square. Have them do this until their worksheets have been filled out.
  • Enrichment:Give your students more numbers and squares, and have them place the correct amount of plastic pieces on them. For example, make additional worksheets with the numbers 10-15 on them.
  • Support:Give your students the Support sheet with fewer numbers. During independent working time, have them repeat the numbers one through five on their own.
(5 minutes)
  • Walk around, and take note of what your students are counting.
  • On the assessment worksheet, write your students' names in the empty space provided. Circle the numbers your students can recognise.
(5 minutes)
  • Display the Number Pictures Matching GameUsing a projector or interactive whiteboard.
  • Ask your students to choose one card with sea animals. Have one student count the number of sea animals on the card.
  • Have one student find the correct number card that matches with the number of sea animals.
  • Repeat this process until the game has been completed.
