  • Students will be able to write a seven-digit number in standard form, word form, and expanded form.
The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.
EL adjustments
(10 minutes)
  • Read a book aloud that introduces the concept of a million, like one of these:
    • How Big Is a Million?By Anna Milbourne
    • How Much Is a Million?By David Schwartz
    • A Million DotsBy Andrew Clements
  • Tell students that today we are going to talk about place value and numbers in the millions.
(10 minutes)
  • Draw or display a place value chart with the place values and periods labeled. Review the period names and place value names.
  • Write a number in the chart, like 6,129,534.
  • Explain that each place is ten times the place to its right. Draw an arrow pointing to the digit in the tens place and write 3 x 10. Draw an arrow to the digit in the hundreds place and write 5 x 100. Continue for each place value.
  • Explain that this number is written in Standard formWhich means it is written with counting numbers, the way we usually see numbers written.
  • Write the number in Word form(the way we read or say numbers aloud; e.g., six million, one hundred twenty nine thousand, five hundred thirty-four).
  • Write the number in Expanded form(a way to break a number apart to show the value of each place value; e.g., 6,000,000 + 100,000 + 20,000 + 9,000 + 500 + 30 + 4).
(10 minutes)
  • Write another number on the board, like 23,019,725.
  • Read it aloud to the class, then have students read it aloud with you. Have students write it in word form. Read it aloud again if necessary to support students.
  • Have students work with a partner to write the number in expanded form. Invite students to come up to the board and have each student write one place value in expanded form so that after several students have come up, the whole number is written in expanded form.
(10 minutes)
  • Write three numbers on the board, one in standard form, one in word form, and one in expanded form. Have students write each number in the other two forms (i.e., if the number is written in word form, students would write it in standard form and expanded form). Possible numbers:
    • 2,942,013
    • Sixteen million, eight hundred sixty seven thousand, four hundred fifty-one
    • 7,000,000 + 200,000 + 9,000 + 400 + 80 + 5
  • Circulate and offer support as needed.

Enrichment:

  • Have students perform calculations with numbers in the millions place (e.g., 5,018,349 + 2,934,291).
  • Have students solve word problems with numbers in the millions.

Support:

  • Provide additional examples during guided practise.
  • Provide blank place value charts and have students practise writing given numbers in the chart.
  • Provide partially complete answers (i.e., numbers in expanded form that have only a few place values missing) and allow students to complete the missing parts.
(10 minutes)
  • Hand out dice so that each student has access to one (several students can share or take turns if needed).
  • Hand out scratch paper or an index card.
  • Instruct students to roll their die seven times to create a number (each roll will produce a digit in one place value so that seven rolls produce a number in the millions place).
  • Have students write their number on their scratch paper. Then instruct them to write the number in word form and expanded form.
  • Collect and check for understanding.
