Identifying Shapes: Magical Castle
Students will be able to identify different shapes and colors.
- Have the students gather into a group.
- Tell your students that they will be learning about shapes with a magical castle.
- Ask them to name some shapes they might know.
- Introduce students to any shapes they didn't name but you used to decorate your castle.
- Bring out the foam creature you will be hiding and tell the students that they have to spot where he goes hiding in the castle.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Read a book about shapes to review the names of shapes with your class.
- Bring out the castle and point to each shape as you say the name and colour.
- Ask students to close their eyes while the little creature finds a hiding spot under a shape.
- After you have placed the foam creature under a shape ask them to open their eyes and take turns guessing which shape flap to lift to find the creature.
- Repeat this process a few more times until your class starts to grasp the concept.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Have each student take a turn hiding the creature under any shape and let the other students guess where it is.
- Give clues for students who are struggling to follow the activity.
- Review the colors and shapes once more.
Independent working time(10 minutes)
- Put the students in pairs or small groups.
- Have each group create their own castles using precut shapes.
- If desired, give each group a list of shapes that they must use on their castle to see if they are able to identify the names of the shapes. Walk around the groups to remind students orally of their shape requirements.
- Enrichment:Write names of colors on one set of index cards and names of shapes on another set. As the students guess where the foam creature is hiding, they can look for and hold up the two index cards to display their guess. This will help them in trying to read the words.
- Support:Allow struggling students to name just the colour of the shape while guessing if they are unable to remember the names of the shapes.
- Observe and take notes as the students are working in pairs or small groups.
- Ask questions to check if they understand the activity and the concept you want them to learn.
- Provide assistance where needed. This will also help you to see how well the students have understood the lesson or if they need extra practise.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Call your students back into a group when they have finished their castles.
- Review all the shapes on the castle along with their colors.
- Ask students if they have any final questions.
