Literary Vocabulary, Understanding Plot Lesson Part I

Have you ever imagined the action and imagery used in conflict during fantasy fiction novels? Using an Education.com workbook, students will learn the vocabulary of literature and complete a crossword puzzle.

Students will be able to define common literary terms.

(5 minutes)
Reading Like a Writer, Writing Like a Reader
  • Tell students that today they are going to be learning about common literary terms.
  • Ask students if they remember any of these terms. Write the terms they remember on the board.
(5 minutes)
  • On the board, write down the first vocabulary term and definition from the Talking About Literature section of the workbook, action.
  • Alternatively, pass out the workbooks now to so students can read along.
  • Now choose a student to act out about 30 seconds of an action from your recent class read.
  • Repeat this process with the next one or two terms.
(20 minutes)
  • Pass out workbooks.
  • Have students break up into small groups.
  • Instruct each group to read and discuss the vocabulary terms together.
(20 minutes)
  • Have students return to their own desks and complete the crossword puzzle on page 6 of the workbook.
  • Enrichment:Students in need of enrichment may create posters or anchor charts to show literary vocabulary terms.
  • Support:Students in need of support may have small group or one-on-one time with the teacher. Students in need of support may create artwork or anchor charts depicting terms that are proving difficult for them to grasp.
(5 minutes)
  • Students will turn in their individually completed crossword puzzles for assessment.
(5 minutes)
  • Ask students to put away their workbooks.
  • Now ask them review questions: Some questions might include things like vocabulary definitions, the word that goes with the definition, or even what stories they can think of that showcase certain vocabulary words.
