Here Comes the Letter of the Day: A!

Students will be able to write the uppercase and lowercase letter A.

(5 minutes)
  • Ask the class to join you in singing the alphabet song.
  • As you sing, point to the letters of the alphabet using a classroom letter chart.
(5 minutes)
  • Draw the lowercase and uppercase letter A on the whiteboard. Point to the letter A and say, “This is the letter A, it makes two different sounds. Does anyone know what two sounds this letter makes?”
(5 minutes)
  • Draw the lowercase and uppercase letter A on the whiteboard. Point to the letter A and say, “This is the letter A, it makes two different sounds. Does anyone know what two sounds this letter makes?”
  • Allow for students to share ideas.
  • Explain that the letter A makes a short sound, AhLike in the word apple, and also says it name AyLike in the word ape.
  • Point to each of the letter A’s (lowercase and uppercase) and explain that each of the letters of the alphabet has an uppercase or capital letter (point to A on board) and a small or lowercase letter (point to a on board).
  • Demonstrate how to write each letter.
(5 minutes)
  • Tell the students that you are going to give each of them a magic paintbrush that writes invisible letters in the air. Show the students how you can dip your brush (finger) in magic “ink” and write the letter A in the air.
  • Have the students all practise writing both the uppercase and the lowercase letter A in the air using their magic paintbrush.
(15 minutes)
  • Explain that now students will get to practise writing the letter A using a pencil. When they finish writing the letter A, they can think of words that start with the letter and draw pictures of each word.
  • Pass out the Alphabet practise: A worksheets to each student.

Support

  • Provide images of several items that start with the letter A for students to choose from.
  • Allow students additional practise forming the letter A using a wet sponge and chalkboard.

Enrichment

  • Ask students to think of additional words that begin with the letter A. They can record drawings of their A words on the back of the worksheet.
(5 minutes)
  • Assess whether students are able to form the uppercase and lowercase letter A using the worksheet.
  • Check whether students are able to identify words that begin with the letter A for the drawing portion of the worksheet.
(5 minutes)
  • Gather the class back together and have students popcorn share the words that they found and drew that started with the letter A.
