# GEMDAS: Flipped Order of Operations

#### Learning Objectives

Students will identify the components of GEMDAS and use them in practise.

#### Introduction

*(10 minutes)*

- Prior to conducting this lesson, have students view
*Order of Operations: GEMDAS*. - Have students create a list of questions and thoughts as they watch the video.
- Allow volunteers to share their thoughts.
- Write an equation on the board such as: {60 – [4 x (7 -2) + 23]} + 32
- Ask students if they know what they should do first, second, etc.
- Ask students if there is an easier way to remember what order to complete the operations in.
- Tell students that today they are going to learn a trick that other students use to remember the order.
- Explain to students that in this lesson they will create a flippable graphic organizer to learn an easy acronym that will help them learn, understand, and identify the order for evaluating numerical expressions.

#### Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling

*(5 minutes)*

- Have students cut and glue the GEMDAS flippable in their writer’s notebook or on a sheet of paper.
- Have them cut on the dotted lines to make flaps.
- Have students read the GEMDAS Flippable Information sheet.
- Have students write the symbols and verbal instructions in their own words under the flap.
- Advise students to write an equation like {60 – [4 x (7 -2) + 23]} + 32 on their paper.
- Have students use colored markers to identify the grouping symbols.

#### Guided practise

*(15 minutes)*

- Using the GEMDAS Flippable and GEMDAS Flippable Information sheet, have students work in pairs or small groups to finish the flippable according to the instructions they received in the teacher modeling section instructions.
- Students will write the symbols and verbal instructions in their own words under the tabs then use colored markers to identify the symbols.
- Remind students to work with their partner or group to complete this assignment.

#### Independent working time

*(25 minutes)*

- Remind students to work alone to complete this part of the lesson.
- Using the GEMDAS Flippable, have students complete the GEMDAS Independent practise worksheet.
- Remind students that this is an independent assignment and should they need help they should ask you not each other.

#### Differentiation

**Enrichment:**Allow students to create their own GEMDAS graphic organizer, create and solve problems of their own which could also include the addition different grouping symbols.**Support:**Have students to work through various numerical expressions with guided support by you or a peer mentor.

#### Assessment

*(5 minutes)*

- Observe students as they work through the worksheet.
- Assist struggling students as necessary.
- Check worksheets for correctness.

#### Review and closing

*(5 minutes)*

- Recap today’s lesson, including the meaning behind GEMDAS.
- Have students explain in their own words what they learned today and how they think they will use it in class.
- Allow students to ask questions that they still have.
