Friends Are Fun!
Students will be able to identify the qualities of a friend.
- Gather the class together for a read aloud.
- Ask the students, “What does it mean to be a good friend?”
- Have students turn and talk to a partner to share their ideas.
- Invite a few pairs to share their ideas with the group.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(10 minutes)
- Read aloud the book The Recess QueenBy Alexis O’Neill.
- As you read, pause and ask the students how they think the other kids might feel when they are around Jean.
Guided practise(5 minutes)
- Ask the students to think about the story and what they learned about Mean Jean. (For example, Maybe she isn’t mean at all?)
- Refer back to some of the ideas students shared about friendship during the lesson introduction as you say, “There are many ways to show our friends we care about them. Let’s think about how our friends might feel when we treat them like a friend.”
- Have students share some more ways they can be a good friend (e.g., taking turns, sharing toys, inviting to play a game).
Independent working time(20 minutes)
- Explain that students will now get to choose one way they can be a good friend and create a page for the class friendship book.
- Write the sentence, “I can be a good friend by____.” on the board for students to use on their page.
- Demonstrate choosing an idea, such as “I can be a good friend by sharing.” Write that sentence along with drawing an illustration for the book.
- Tell the students that the book will go in the classroom library to remind them of all of the different ways to be a friend.
- Pass out supplies for students to work independently.
Encourage students to add additional details to their book page. Invite them to create a second page for the book using a different idea of friendship.
Help students decide what to write and draw about by referencing the list on the board or ideas given during the previous parts of the lesson.
- As students work, check to see that they chose one idea to show friendship and they are able to draw and write about their idea in their book page.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Put the pages together to form a classroom book.
- Read the book aloud to the class.
- Say, “This is such a great book of ideas of how to be a good friend! I hope you all use this to become even better friends to each other.”
