Students will be able to evaluate texts for facts, opinions and related ideas using context clues.
- Write the word ChecklistOn the board and ask your students to turn to an elbow partner and tell them all the different uses we have for checklists.
- Have your students share out what they said or heard from a partner while you write ideas down in a brainstorm fashion.
- Explain that checklists allow us to evaluate things based on a set of features.
- Inform students that they will be learning how to use checklists to evaluate facts, opinions and their related ideas.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(5 minutes)
- Preview and demonstrate how to use the Facts, Opinions and Related Ideas resource with the Sea Level Rise text selection. Answer student questions as needed.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Hand out a class set of the Sea Level Rise article and read it aloud with your students.
- Hand out and preview the Facts, Opinions and Related Ideas resource.
- Together, find one fact, one opinion and their related ideas. Answer any clarifying questions.
Independent working time(10 minutes)
- Release students to complete the Facts, Opinions and Related Ideas resource with a partner or in small groups.
- Evaluate the Sea Level Rise article for two or more facts or opinions whole class.
- Have students evaluate the Sea Level Rise article with the Facts vs. Opinion resource.
- Students can use theFact vs. Opinion checklistWith the Sea Level Rise article.
- Have your students make up one fact and one opinion and explain why they labeled each fact or opinion.
Review and closing(10 minutes)
Discuss: Why is it important for citizens to be able to determine fact from opinions?
