Students will be able to identify multiple-meaning words and determine their meanings.


Students will be able to identify homophones and their meanings in a fiction text with grade level words using visual and written supports.

(2 minutes)
  • Introduce the lesson by displaying the read-aloud text. Share the title and go on a short picture walk.
  • Engage students in a quick discussion about the text by asking them to turn and talk to a partner to share what they think the text will be about.
(10 minutes)
  • Go over the tiered vocabulary words by using the vocabulary cards and glossary to provide student-friendly definitions. Have students turn and talk to share the meaning of each new word with a partner.
  • Read aloud the text. As you read, record the homophones from the story on an anchor chart titled "Homophones" to use later in the lesson.
(5 minutes)
  • Go over the homophones written on the anchor chart and discuss how each one was used in the story (encourage students to identify how the words fit into each part of the story).
  • Have students practise using a pair of homophones in a sentence verbally with a partner to demonstrate the differences in their meaning.
(10 minutes)
  • Pass out paper and pencils and have students write down two sentences using a homophone pair from the anchor chart (e.g. dear, deer).
  • Encourage students to illustrate their sentences to further demonstrate their understanding of the differences in each word in the homophone pair.


  • Students can choose a pair of homophones and draw each one to illustrate the meaning.


  • Students can identify additional homophones and use them in a short story.
(5 minutes)
  • Assess if students are able to differentiate between multiple meaning words that share the same pronunciation as they use the words verbally and in written sentences.
  • Collect student work and assess if students are able to accurately use the homophones in a sentence.
(3 minutes)
  • Close by having students share out their sentences with the class.
  • Explain that homophones are really fun words because you can use them in silly ways just like in the read-aloud story.
