Sharing Ideas with a Friend
Objectives
Academic
Students will be able to share books with another person.
Language
Students will be participate in shared discussions about a grade level text with a peer using illustrated partnership rule cards.
Introduction
(2 minutes)- Prior to the start of the lesson, display partnership rule cards using the Vocabulary Cards included with this lesson
- Gather the class together for a read aloud.
- Introduce the days lesson by saying, "Today we are going to talk about sharing books with a partner. What are some important things to remember when you are sharing a story with a partner?"
Building academic language
Word
(10 minutes)- Provide an idea to get students started. Say, "When I share with my partner I listen to them." Then, have students share out their ideas using the same sentence starter, "When I share with my partner I _____."
- As students share, display the relevent Vocabulary Cards that show examples of partnership expectations.
- Explain that now you will read aloud a text and you want all of the class to practise listening and looking carefully while you read.
Sentence
(5 minutes)- Review what happened in the story by flipping through the pages and reminding students what happened at the beginning, middle, and end.
- Pair students together and assign each a number (1 or 2). Ask partner #1 to to share what happened at the beginning, while partner #2 practices listening. Repeat for the middle and ending of the story.
Discourse
(10 minutes)- Ask students to think about the most important part of the story (answers will vary). Then, pass out paper and have them draw a picture of their answer.
- Model how to share ideas (about the most important part) and listen to a partner using another student or an assistent as your partner.
- Pair students up and have them share their pictures (again assigning #1 and #2) as they practise using the displayed partnership rules.
Additional EL adaptations
Beginning
- Gather a small group of students together to practise following the partnership rules.
Advanced
- Have students choose a new book to share with their partner.
- Ask students to practise using the partnership rules to ask and answer questions as they share.
Formative Assessment of Academic Language
(5 minutes)- As students are sharing with their partner, take note of who's able to follow the partnership rules and who's struggling. Pull these students aside for further practise.
- Collect student work and assess if students were able to draw a picture connected to the story.
Review and closing
(3 minutes)- Bring the class back together and ask students to share how it felt to be the listener vs. the sharer. Provide them with sentence starters, "I liked being the listener because ____. It was hard to be the ____Because ____."
- Explain that you will be leaving the partnership rules up and briefly review why it is important to listen/share/take turns with a partner.
