Lesson plan
Division as Multiplication Using Number Lines
Learning Objectives
Students will be able to illustrate division as multiplication using number lines.
Introduction
(5 minutes)- Show the following expression to your students: 12 ÷ 5.
- Have them think, pair, and share how this expression is related to multiplication.
- Have students share with the whole class. Ask students to draw connections of how this expression can be rewritten as an improper fraction: 12/5.
- Further note to your class that since 12/5 = 12 x 1/12, it follows that 12 ÷ 5 = 12 x 1/12.
- Answer any clarifying questions and announce that this translation is central to today’s lesson.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling
(10 minutes)- Hand out and preview the Modeling Division Using Number Lines worksheet with your students.
Guided practise
(10 minutes)- Model exercises 1, 6, 11, and 16 with your class. Be sure to answer any clarifying questions.
Independent working time
(15 minutes)- Have your students complete the remaining exercises on the Modeling Division Using Number Lines worksheet.

Technology Integration
- Projectors make for a great setup to display lesson materials in an interactive way on whiteboard using dry erase markers.
Assessment
(5 minutes)- Show your students a number line that shows 9 x 1/7 and ask them to describe the division expression and its quotient.
Review and closing
(10 minutes)- Have students share out their answers and explanations whole class and:
- Allow peers to challenge answers in dispute to offer alternative of correct answers.
- Have students phone a friend for assistance with answer explanations if they need help.
