Students will be able to define the word "compliment," practise giving and receiving compliments, and offer kind words through drawing and writing.
- Bring students together in a circle, either seated or standing.
- Give the class a compliment. For example, share that they came and sat quietly, or that they have been working hard on assignments. Offer a compliment to the class that feels genuine to you.
- Ask, "What is it called when we sincerely call out the good and kindness in others?"
- If needed, say, "It starts with a 'C.'"
- Give students clues, if they are unsure, helping them to arrive at the word "compliments."
- Ask students, "What does it mean to give a compliment? How does it feel to receive a compliment?"
- Explain that they will participate in an activity where each person will give another person a compliment in pairs. Pair students up and then assign each partner to be either A or B. Tell the class that those that were assigned the letter A will go first.
- Ask them to say the partner's name (who they are complimenting) loud enough so their partner can hear and to be sincere in what they say.
- Ask, "What does it mean to be sincere?"
- Explain that to be SincereIs to really mean what you say because it comes from your heart.
- Ask the class to hold their hand on their heart and take a few deep breaths.
- Explain that once they have received a compliment they may put their hand back down on their lap or by their side, and then it will be time for those assigned the letter B to share.
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(15 minutes)
- Have the class reflect on what it was like to receive the compliment. How did they feel?
- Share that it can be a helpful to really take in the kind words.
- Explain that we can spread kindness by giving compliments to another person when we receive a compliment.
- Have 1–2 students share their compliments for their partner with the whole class, and as they share allow for a pause after each compliment to let each student soak in the kindness.
- Ask the student volunteers who shared compliments, "How did you feel when you gave your compliment?"
- Ask the students who received compliments, "What did you notice and how did you feel when you received a compliment?"
- Give the class the following challenge: Try to give at least two other people a sincere compliment today and notice what it feels like for you and the person receiving the compliment.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Review and model the Compliment Notes worksheet with the class.
- Generate a list of words and phrases on the board that they may use in their compliment notes (e.g., thank you, you are kind, you are helpful, etc.).
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Dismiss students back to their seats to work on their Compliment Notes worksheet.
Enrichment: Ask advanced students to draw a picture or write a letter to their parents or a loved one, complimenting them.
Support: Work one-on-one or in small groups with some students and provide support with the compliment notes.
- Walk around the room and check student understanding of compliments during independent work.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Bring students back together in a circle.
- Ask them to bring their Compliment Notes.
- Ask the class to share what they wrote or drew with a partner. Then, after the pair-share, have a few partners tell the whole class what they discussed.
- Ask the class to share what they learned today and how they plan to practise the compliment challenge from earlier in the lesson.
- Close by giving a genuine, heartfelt compliment to the class.
