Caring for Our Classroom Community
Students will be able to practise heartfulness and discuss how they can be caring with their words and deeds.
- Join students together in a circle, seated or standing.
- Introduce your completed puppet to the class.
- Have the bear puppet ask the class, "What does it mean to be caring?"
- Have the bear ask, "How does it feel when someone else cares for you?"
- Ask, "What are some caring and kind words to say to others?"
- Write these words on the board.
- Explain that you will play a song about caring and that the students will walk or dance around the room. When the music stops each student will stop and say a caring and kind word to another student.
- Have the bear puppet model for students how to dance to the music and then to pause when the music stops and to say caring words to the class.
- Play the "Caring Song" and ask the class to stand up to move around the room.
- Pause the music and ask students to get together with one other friend and to say a few kind and caring words to them.
- Continue to play and pause the music to share caring words two to three more times.
- Bring the class back together in a circle.
- Ask, "What was that like? How did it feel to say and hear caring words?"
Explicit Instruction/Teacher modeling(15 minutes)
- Have the puppet ask, "What are some other ways we can show we care?"
- Have the puppet explain that we can also show caring by cleaning up our messes and helping others when they need help.
- Write down and draw pictures of how the class can show kindness and care.
- Have the puppet explain that they will be asked to practise one caring deed for someone else today and then share out to the class what they did at the end of the day.
- Explain that another way to show care is with kind thoughts, which is called "heartfulness."
- Ask students to repeat after you when you say, "Heartfulness."
- Have the bear puppet guide students in a heartfulness activity (sending kind wishes to their classroom friends).
- Have the puppet ask students to sit up nice and tall and to take a few deep breaths.
- Have the puppet guide students to place their hand on their heart and to close their eyes if they would like.
- Have the puppet ask the class to imagine all of their classmates and friends and to remember the things they love about their classroom friends.
- Have the puppet guide them to say in their minds, "May we be happy..." (pause) "May we feel loved..." (pause) "May we care for each other..." (pause) "May we feel peace."
- Have the puppet guide students to take a few deep breaths and to slowly open their eyes if they are closed.
Guided practise(10 minutes)
- Review the Kindness Bear Puppet worksheet for the class.
- Dismiss students to go back to their seats to work independently.
- Field any questions and support students that need additional help.
Independent working time(15 minutes)
- Provide assistance as needed to students as they complete their Kindness Bear Puppet worksheets.
Enrichment: Ask advanced students to lead the class in heartfulness at another time with their puppet.
Support: Work one-on-one or in small groups with some students and provide support with the worksheet and their puppets.
- Walk around the room and check to see if students are able to follow instructions. Connect with as many individual students as possible and ask what they've learned about caring and practising heartfulness.
Review and closing(5 minutes)
- Bring students back together in a circle (ask them to bring their puppets).
- Ask students to have their puppet say one word to remind the class to use kindness and caring in the classroom.
- Model for them, using your bear, and have your puppet say a caring word.
- Explain that students can use their bears again to lead the class in heartfulness each day and that the puppets will be placed in a special place for this.
