Blooming Numbers

Numbers are blooming! In this flower-themed lesson, students will create a piece of maths artwork that will help them practise recognition of numbers through ten.

Students will be able to recognise and name numbers 1 through 10. Students will be able to count and combine petals of flowers to name the total. Students will be able to write numbers 1 through 10.

The adjustment to the whole group lesson is a modification to differentiate for children who are English learners.
EL adjustments
(5 minutes)
  • Introduce the lesson with a counting warm-up.
  • Using the Flower Counting worksheet, invite the students to say the number and then to count out the exact number, circling the total.
(5 minutes)
  • Using the SMART Board file or a printed version, demonstrate the process of counting the petals and writing the total number of petals in the middle of the flower.
  • Tell the students that they will be creating their own number flowers.
(10 minutes)
  • Distribute petal and circle patterns, scissors, pencils, and construction paper.
  • Tell the students that they will be making one flower together and then they will be given time to create their own flowers.
  • Guide the students in tracing and cutting out one circle and three petals using pieces of construction paper.
  • After the students have cut out the petals and circle, show them how to create their flowers and write the numbers on them. Use the SMART Board demonstration guide as needed.
(15 minutes)
  • Tell the students that they will now have the choice of making different flowers that are blooming numbers.
  • Have your students place 1–10 petals on each flower.
  • Display the counting chart. If students have difficulty naming the numbers, direct them to the chart as a reference.
  • Give the students enough time to make at least two more flowers, and ask them to glue the flowers on the white construction paper or tagboard. Tell them that they can add stems and grass to their pictures.


  • For students who may struggle with fine motor skills, provide precut or pretraced flower petals and circles. For students who struggle with counting and matching corresponding numbers, print the counting chart and give them individual copies to reference when they are working.


  • As an extra challenge, assign the Flowers in the Garden cut and paste activity. Ask the students to find the total number of flowers in each box and the total number of orange petals in each box.
  • Have the students create their flowers and petals digitally. Use any digital software or program for students to design, create, and label the numbers on their flowers.
(10 minutes)
  • Assign the Colorful Spring Garden worksheet to assess number recognition.
  • Have students use the key to colour the petals based on the number.
  • Ask your students to write the total number of petals in the centre of each flower.
(5 minutes)
  • Have the students bring their "blooming" artwork and sit in a circle.
  • Give students the opportunity to share one of their flowers and show the class how they can count the petals on the flower.
