Article and Adverb Attachments

Help your students attach meaning between nouns, verbs, and corresponding modifiers! In this interactive lesson, students will be an active part of a noun and verb brainstorm before they use articles and adverbs.

(5 minutes)
  • Invite students to share a time when they have needed to add or insert an extra word in their writing. When have words worked together or acted as partners to provide a deeper meaning?
  • Review adjectives and tell the students that they will be learning how to use two other kinds of words in their writing: articles and adverbs.
(10 minutes)
  • Tell the students that both articles and adverbs can be used alongside nouns and verbs to enhance their meaning. Articles can be used to show something as general or specific, while adverbs can provide greater information about a verb, including Where, When, or How.
  • Demonstrate the process of adding articles to a noun and adverbs to verbs using several examples of nouns and verbs as follows.
  • Pull out a labeled index card from the brown paper bag and place it in the pocket chart or affix it to the board.
  • Using a blank index card, model the process of writing an article or an adverb and placing it in the correct location (in front of the card or behind the card).
  • Continue pulling out cards. Invite students to participate in naming each type of word as a noun or verb before you demonstrate how an article or adverb can be attached and used with the word.
(10 minutes)
  • Direct the students’ attention to the two pieces of chart paper posted in the room.
  • Write the word "Nouns" on the top of one piece of chart paper.
  • Write the word "Verbs" on the other piece of chart paper.
  • Invite students to participate in a silent graffiti activity in which they brainstorm and write nouns and verbs on the corresponding paper.
  • Once students are finished with the initial brainstorm, invite them to return to their seats.
  • Distribute an individual whiteboard and whiteboard marker to each student.
  • Call out one of the words from the chart paper that contains nouns.
  • Ask students to write that word on their whiteboard, adding an article or adverb to modify the word.
  • Invite students to share their thinking.
  • Next, ask the students to use that pair of words in a sentence while also writing it on their individual whiteboards.
  • Give students the opportunity to share their work and provide additional guidance as needed.
(15 minutes)
  • Ask students to complete the worksheets All About Adverbs: Writing Sentences and Using Articles.
  • Circulate around the room and check to see that students are modifying the words correctly.


  • Provide sentence frames or sentence starters as students are writing.


  • Integrate adjectives into the activity as you challenge students to write about the same topic while using adverbs, adjectives, and articles in different ways.
  • For an extra challenge, ask the students to try to use an adjective, article, and adverb in the same sentence.
  • Consider using Padlet or another brainstorming tool for students to type their nouns and verbs rather than writing them on chart paper.
(5 minutes)
  • Distribute exit cards or ask students to get out their journals.
  • Give students several nouns and verbs or select several nouns and verbs from the chart paper.
  • Ask students to write several sentences that include articles and adverbs, showing how the words can be used in context.
  • Check to see that students are using modifiers correctly.
(10 minutes)
  • Divide the students up into two teams.
  • Give each team an individual whiteboard and whiteboard marker.
  • Tell the students that you are going to show them a word or tell them a word. Their task is to add an article or adverb that fits that word. When they have finished writing on their whiteboard, they should stand up and show their board. After one person takes a turn, the next person on that team will have a turn.
  • Play several rounds of the game, as time permits.
  • Invite students to share with their team what they learned about articles and adverbs before asking groups to share with the class.
