Four Types Of Regions

Students will be able to identify the four types of regions used to describe a nation. Students will be able to describe the four types of regions using examples.

(10 minutes)
  • Ask your students about the political system, culture, economy, and population of the United States.
  • Tell your students that they will be learning about the four ways regions can be used to describe a nation.
(15 minutes)
  • Go over the Four Types Of Regions slideshow presentation.
  • Read the explanation for each region on the slides. Think of examples that are relevant to your students, that they can relate to, to help with comprehension.
(20 minutes)
  • Ask your students to describe the political, economic, cultural, and population regions of the US.
  • Go over the description of each region as a class.
  • Make sure that students include examples such as democracy and elections for the political region. Make sure students include "urban" for population region, individual rights and right to life, liberty, and happiness for cultural region, and information technology and manufacturing for economic region.
(60 minutes)
  • Ask your students to compare and contrast the following areas based on regions. Tell them to use computers and books for their research: the political region of US with Mexico, the cultural region of US with China, the economic region of US with Nigeria, and the population region of US with India.
  • Have your students include at least two contrasts and one similarity for each one.
  • Ask your students to create a Venn diagram for each compare and contrast statement.
  • Enrichment:Ask your students to write an extension for one of their Venn Diagrams. They should write a five paragraph essay explaining each difference and similarity in detail with examples. Students should use at least three books for their research.
  • Support:Ask your students about a country they have visited or one they are familiar with. Conduct a verbal discussion comparing the political, economic, population, and cultural region of that country with the United States.
(15 minutes)
  • Ask your students to write a paragraph describing the political, economic, population, and cultural region of any country of their choosing.
(30 minutes)
  • Ask your students to present any one of their Venn diagrams from Independent Working Time.
