Stocking Craft

First Grade Holidays Activities: Stocking Craft

What You Need:

  • Red construction paper
  • Green construction paper
  • Red tissue paper
  • Cotton balls
  • Glue
  • Pencil
  • Scissors
  • Pencil
  • Metallic pom poms
  • Glitter glue

What You Do:

  1. Have your child use scissors to cut the red tissue paper into tiny squares. The exact dimensions are not important, and slight variety from square to square is encouraged. Just make sure none of the squares' sides are much longer than an inch or two.
  2. Help her draw a stocking shape on a sheet of construction paper. The bigger the stocking, the better!
  3. Let her use scissors to cut out her paper stocking.
  4. Have her use a pencil to draw a line across the stocking. This line will separate the cotton top from the red tissue bottom.
  5. Show your child how to  twist each tissue paper square. You'll place the eraser end of a pencil in the centre of a square and gently twist.
  6. Dip the tissue-wrapped pencil in a small bowl of glue.
  7. Stamp the pencil down on the paper stocking, leaving the twisted tissue square behind.
  8. Help your child continue to repeat this process with all of her red squares until the stocking is completely covered.
  9. Have her glue a few layers of cotton balls to the top of the stocking.
  10. Does the stocking still need an extra-special festive touch? She can make holly sprigs out of green construction paper and berries out of the metallic pom poms.
