Build a Pom Pom Bat

First Grade Arts & crafts Activities: Build a Pom Pom Bat

What You Need:

  • Small pom pom (make it yourself or purchase a local craft store)
  • 2 large wiggly eyes or black and white construction paper
  • Hot glue gun
  • Black craft foam
  • Black pipe cleaner
  • Safety scissors
  • String or yarn

What You Do:

  1. If you are not using wiggly eyes, make eyes out of the black and white construction paper. Cut and glue a smaller white circle in the centre of a larger black circle.
  2. Have your child glue the eyes on the pom pom. This will be the body of the bat.
  3. Ask your child to draw wings on a piece of craft foam and cut them out with safety scissors.
  4. Attach these to the sides of the pom pom using a hot glue gun.
  5. Help your child bend a pipe cleaner to create pointy ears, forming a small coil in the middle through which string or yarn can be threaded for hanging.
  6. Glue the ears into place using a hot glue gun.
  7. Once all the glue is dry, your child can string a piece of string or yarn through the pipe cleaner and hang it up.

Did You Know?

Bats come in all different sizes! The bumblebee bat, also known as Kitti’s Hog-nosed bat, is the smallest bat in the world and is about the size of a bumblebee (hence the name). The largest, known as the Flying Fox or Old World Fruit Bat, can be up to 16 inches long with a wingspan of five feet!
