Third Grade Reading & Writing Activities: My Bookmark

What You Need:

  • Card Stock
  • Ruler
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils
  • Scissors
  • Contact paper
  • Book
  • Pen
  • Hole puncher
  • Ribbon

What You Do:

  1. Have your child use a ruler to draw a rectangle on the card stock. The dimensions don't need to be exact, but a shape about two inches wide and seven inches tall is a good reference point.
  2. Let her use scissors to cut out the rectangle.
  3. Have her use colored pencils to decorate the bookmark with designs around the margins, or edges, of the card stock rectangle. Encourage her designs to relate in some way to the book she's reading.
  4. At the top of her bookmark, have her write the book's title.
  5. Let her use this half-finished bookmark as she reads her book. Each time she finds a quote or a scene that she likes in the book, she should write down the quote on the bookmark along with the page number she found it on.
  6. After she's completely gone through the book and picked out her favorite quotes and scenes, help her laminate the bookmark with contact paper. She first needs to trace her bookmark twice on the contact paper.
  7. Then have her cut out the contact paper rectangles.
  8. Place the contact paper sheets on the front and back of the bookmark.
  9. Let your child use scissors to trim the edges.
  10. To add one final bit of flare to your child’s homemade bookmark, have her  punch out a hole at the top of the bookmark.
  11. Help her tie a ribbon through the hole. Your child now has a charming personalized bookmark to remember her latest reading adventure!
