Looking for a new way to make Mother’s Day special this year? All you need are some simple materials and a bit of creativity for this project perfect for teenagers! Turn all those broken bits of plates and random buttons into a lovely flowerpot. Your child can mosaic her way to a special gift that Mom will never forget!
What You Need:
- Sketch paper
- Pencil
- Terra cotta flower pot
- Quick-drying concrete
- Small beads, buttons, or broken bits of plates
- Paper bag
- Hammer
- Small plastic container
- Plastic spoon
- Paper plate
What You Do:
- Invite your child to scour the house looking for random buttons, beads, or cracked or broken plates to use for creating the mosaic flower pot. A mosaic is a picture or pattern created using bits and pieces of hard objects – so this is a great project for repurposing small items!
- Encourage your child to create a sketch for her Mother’s Day flower pot. She can even arrange the pieces on the paper to get an idea of how things will look. This is the time to carefully break up plates to create smaller pieces. She can place items in a paper bag and then carefully tap them with a hammer. Be careful – the edges will be sharp!
- When she’s ready, invite your child to mix together a small amount of quick-drying cement with some water in a small plastic container. The bottom of a milk carton works great!
- Now she can place the terra cotta pot on a paper plate and use the plastic spoon to smooth a layer of concrete on the top section of the pot. Invite her to begin pressing her objects into the cement, securing them in place, and honing her fine motor skills!
- Encourage her to continue working until she’s satisfied with her creation. Allow the pot to dry overnight.
- Now she can plant a beautiful flower in the pot and give it to Mom on Mother’s Day!
