It’s that time of year and, once again, your child will likely ask you, “What should I get Dad for Father’s Day?”. Instead of running to the mall, suggest this Father’s Day Timeline! Your child will get an opportunity to apply skills she's learning in year three maths, and maybe learn something new about Dad in the process. Personal, hand-made gifts from kids are always the most memorable – and this timeline is one gift dad will never forget!
What You Need:
- Construction paper
- Colored markers
What You Do:
- Ask your child to decide the number of years that should be covered on the timeline. Depending on Dad’s age, suggest that the timeline cover the past 30-60 years. It’s always best to start a timeline at a particular century, half-century or decade (1900, 1950 or 1970).
- Help your child make a list of all of the significant events in Dad’s life and mark the years they occurred. Some examples are: birth, high school graduation, college, met mom, marriage, moves, children’s births, vacations, or anything else particularly important to him.
- Now it’s time for your child to create her timeline. Glue or tape 2-3 sheets of construction paper together. In black marker, draw the timeline and label years in 5 or 10 year intervals. For example, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980, etc… Next, post the significant events in Dad’s life in a different colour. Label the exact date and event.
- Encourage creativity! Have your child decorate the timeline with pictures of Dad, especially those related to the events on the timeline.
There you have it. A great gift for Dad, in practically no time at all!
