Make a Magnetic Menorah

First Grade Holidays Activities: Make a Magnetic Menorah

What You Need:

  • Construction paper
  • Scissors
  • Magnetic strips or sheets
  • Markers or crayons

What You Do:

  1. Let your child decide what colour he would like his menorah to be. Offer up the suggestion that menorahs are often silver or gold, but your child may have fun creating a blue, green, or even pink menorah!
  2. Remind him how many candles to add at the top, and then guide him in drawing and cutting out the proper menorah shape.
  3. Once your child has cut out his menorah, allow him to further decorate it with crayons, colored pencils, or markers to add any more personal touches!
  4. Once the menorah is complete, cut out pieces from the magnetic strips or sheets and apply them to the back of the menorah so that it can be hung on the fridge. Help your child place strips on the bottom, sides, and along each of the candles. There is usually a self-adhesive on the back of the magnetic strips, so you probably won't need any glue or paste.
  5. Assist your child in cutting out small yellow "flames" from yellow construction paper that will sit atop each candle. When your child has successfully cut them all out, place a small magnetic strip on the back of each flame.
  6. Encourage your child to hang the Menorah on the fridge. As each night of Hanukkah passes, help your child hang up one of the yellow "flames" onto the candles!

This is a great holiday craft that works right along with the traditional lighting of your family's "real" menorah!
