Lead Change Like Greta

Kindergarten Reading & Writing Activities: Lead Change Like Greta

What You Need:

What You Do:

  1. Read or listen to Our House Is on FireBy Jeanette Winter.
  2. As you read the book aloud, or support your child in reading the words, ask prompting questions to encourage them to think deeply. Questions might include:
    • What does Greta believe is important? How do you know?
    • How does Greta use her voice to tell others about what she believes is important?
    • How do you use your voice to help your friends and family?
  3. Explain to your child that you are going to think about some ways they take care of the environment. Prompt them to think about some topics they already know about, but would like to learn more about. Examples include helping endangered species, composting, learning about green energy, teaching others how to reuse materials or recycle, planting a garden, making a bug sanctuary, etc.
  4. Fill out everything they know about the topic in the "Know" section of the Nonfiction KWL Chart (alternatively, create your own KWL chart using scrap paper).
  5. Next, guide your child to fill out everything they are wondering about the topic in the "Wonder" section of the Nonfiction KWL Chart.
  6. Use the websites listed above, along with other developmentally appropriate and trustworthy sources, to research your topic.
  7. Guide your child in filling out what they learned in the "Learn" section of the chart.
  8. Explain to your child that they can lead change just like Greta! Help your child make a poster with a plan of action and/or a call to action for their neighbors to place in their windows.
  9. For example, you might post a picture of the steps to plant a garden or some vegetables in a sunny space in your home. Your child can assist you in writing “I Can Help the Earth by Planting Seeds!” Hang the poster in your window to inspire others.

This activity can last multiple days or through an entire week. Encourage your child to add to their KWL chart as they find out new information or new questions arise.
