Make Your Own Postcard

First Grade Reading & Writing Activities: Make Your Own Postcard

What You Need:

  • A6-size flat cards (available at stationery and office supply stores)
  • A6-size envelopes (optional)
  • 4" x 6" photographs
  • Double-sided tape
  • Postage stamps
  • Pen
  • Ruler

What You Do:

  1. Help your child select a favorite photograph. Have your child attach several strips of double-sided tape to the back of a photograph. Make sure to place tape close to each of the four corners, as well as the middle, so the photograph will be secure.
  2. Centre photograph on a card and press down to stick.
  3. On the back of the card, use a pen and ruler to draw a vertical line down the middle, separating the address side from the message side. To the right of the vertical line, draw three lines for the address.
  4. Direct your child in filling in the recipient’s address on the lines, and have them write a short message on the left side of the line. They can embellish it with a small hand-drawn picture as well!
  5. Add appropriate postage and have your child send it off in the mailbox! To protect photographs, you may opt to mail the postcard in an envelope instead.

Try taking your child to the post office to purchase postage stamps and place in the mail slot. This activity can be a wonderful learning experience for them to see how the post office and mailing system works! Ask recipients to send a return postcard, and have your little one watch your mailbox for the results!
