Create a gourmet treat for birds that will inspire your budding bird watcher! If your family cooks bacon or other meats, sometimes you end up with solid fat leftovers called Suet. This project re-uses cooking leftovers to make a gourmet treat for your local birds. For vegan and vegetarian families, coconut oil can be substituted for the suet.
This project is a fun way to help your child gain scientific practise by identifying and categorizing our feathered friends. Once your bird feeder is finished, get cozy by the window and discover which birds live in your neighbourhood! Note: If using in temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit, the fats can melt in the sun. In this case, place the mixture in a shallow tray rather than a tin can (or other) mold.
