Third Grade Reading & Writing Activities: Make an Acrostic Birthday Poem

What You Need:

  • Decorative scrapbook paper
  • Plastic sleeves
  • Pen
  • Stickers, bits of wrapping paper, markers, and other decorations
  • Binder

What You Do:

  1. Have the child write the full date of his birthday vertically on the paper.
  2. Have him use the first letter or number of each line to begin a comment about a specific birthday memory. Here’s an example: AFun day UNder the wrapping paper, a new soccer ball! GReat chocolate cake! UNcle Bob can really kick! SUnny weather TRied to score a goal, but Uncle Bob blocked it! 9Candles on the cake 2Blows to get all the candles out 0Drops of rain 0Pieces of cake left 9More days until my brother's birthday!
  3. Have him decorate the page with scraps of wrapping paper, photos, stickers, or decorative drawings to help commemorate the occasion.
  4. Put the finished page in a plastic sleeve, and put in a binder.
  5. Throughout the year, create a page for each family member and add it to the binder.
